Eye safety in LittleLearn — warm filter, 20-20-20 breaks and a daily cap
LittleLearn treats eye comfort as a learning feature, not a parental-control afterthought. Three protections are active from the very first launch — before a parent changes a single setting — and every one of them runs on-device with no server involved.
Warm light filter, ON by default
A soft sepia-and-dim overlay (CSS sepia 0.10, brightness 0.985, contrast 0.98) warms the whole palette on first launch and cuts harsh blue-white glare. The interface sits on a warm cream background (#FFF7ED) instead of bright white, and the “Eye Care ON” badge in the header shows the state at a glance. Parents can switch it off — the app politely warns that it is not recommended.
20-20-20 story breaks every 20 minutes
Every 20 minutes of play, the 20-20-20 rule becomes a story: Leo the lion appears full-screen and says “Let’s rest our eyes — look at the far mountains”, then runs a 20-second countdown with a breathing animation and progress bar. The break cannot be dismissed by the child until the countdown ends, but it is framed as part of the adventure, never as a punishment. A 25-second demo mode exists for reviews and classrooms.
A daily cap that ends in paper, not autoplay
Each child profile has a daily screen-time cap — 30 minutes by default, adjustable to 15, 45 or 60. A live countdown pill (“30:00 left today”) sits in the header. At the cap, a gentle “Great job today!” screen closes the session and offers printable worksheets for offline paper play. There is no infinite scroll, no autoplay and no “next video” anywhere in the product.
A 2-minute eye stretch mini-game
Inside every break, children can play Eye Stretch: follow a star as it moves left, right, far and near while breathing slowly. It exercises the eye’s focusing range in 60–120 seconds (15 seconds in demo mode) and turns a hygiene rule into a game children ask for.

Eye-safety questions, answered
Does the warm filter change what my child learns?
No. The filter only warms and slightly dims the colour palette to reduce blue-light glare; every activity, letter and number stays fully legible on the high-contrast warm background. It is applied as a page-level overlay, so content, audio and interaction are untouched.
Can my child turn eye protection off?
No. The warm filter and the 20-20-20 breaks are controlled from the parent side only, behind the parent gate (an addition question or a two-second long-press). Children see the breaks as part of Leo’s story, and the daily cap ends the session for everyone.
Is the 20-20-20 break scientifically based?
The 20-20-20 pattern is a widely recommended eye-comfort practice for sustained near work: every 20 minutes, look roughly 20 feet away for 20 seconds so the focusing muscle can relax. LittleLearn automates the cadence and keeps the look-away period to a full 20 seconds.
What happens if we close the app mid-break?
Nothing is lost and nothing is punished. Session time, eye breaks taken and activity progress are saved locally the moment they happen, so the next launch resumes honestly — the daily cap keeps counting from where it stopped.
